- Perform the Chelsea Chop by cutting back certain perennials by 1/3′. If done in early June, your plants will have a later or longer bloom time and a bushier habit. Try this with asters, Black-eyed Susans, or experiment with others.
- Help control Spotted Lanternfly! Our gardeners have been finding Spotted Lanternfly in the nymph stage on several properties. Penn State Extension has information about control and identification here.
- Prune flowering shrubs soon after they bloom.This way you will not cut off next year’s flower buds.
- Set up watering for the summer.This might mean laying out drip hoses for new beds or simply finding your watering cans and placing them where they will be handy. Do this before it gets too hot.
- Cut back foliage from early spring bulbs.
- Cover berries with netting before they ripen to protect them from the birds.
- Thin vegetable plants started from seed.
- Identify and control annual weeds. It is often most effective to control one species of weed at a time and keep it from going to seed.
- Support the plants that tend to flop over before they get large.
- Wear sunscreen, hats, and long sleeves to limit sun exposure.
- Check for ticks after working outside. If you are bitten by a tick, send it to the Pennsylvania Tick Research Lab and get it tested for free.
